Black Mountain has an interesting sound, but the gimmicky lead singer's a deal-breaker for me. I shun Tom Waits and any number of others for the same reason. Give me Bob Dorough any day of the week.

Tom Waits is gimicky? Really? I think not. More like a great story teller with a unique persona and multiple voices that pulls from an expansive musical background to write some excellent songs....not gimicky.

i didn't notice that myself, at least nothing that 'jumped out' as obvious; i do tend to agree with you regarding vocal affectations (not sure i'd use the word 'gimicky') and singers, altho w/Waits, his vocal stylings tend to work with the music and the characters he is singing about, i.e., it's part of the 'entertainment', which is really what most 'acts' tend to be ... is it 'entertainment' or is it 'art'? or is it both? either way, thanks for listening and the feedback
